The existence and identity of the people of God flows from its Source: the self-subsistent, steadfast love which is God’s own life. This divine love, newly revealed in his forgiveness of Israel after the golden calf, was already manifest in God’s call and care for Israel’s ancestors and the basis of the election of the people of God.
