Eligible Candidates: Awarded to full-time on-campus students who are faithful, gifted, and vibrant potential leaders in the New Evangelization. JPII scholars also demonstrate an excellent aptitude for theological study. Prospective students applying to the MA Theology, MA Pastoral Theology, or MA Catholic Education programs are eligible.
Scholarship amount: Full scholarship (100% of tuition) and on-campus room & board for single students. (Though housing for married students is not available on the campus, we invite married students to apply for this scholarship. Married students should contact the admissions department for further details regarding housing opportunities nearby and the details of this scholarship award for those living off campus.)
Selection Process: To be considered for the St. John Paul II Scholarship, candidates must complete an application to the Augustine Institute Graduate School of Theology, ensuring their letters of recommendation testify to their Catholic identity, academic abilities, and leadership potential. Letters from undergraduate professors are strongly encouraged. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to read and synthesize insights into thoughtful written work and expression in their letter of intent and writing sample. Finalists are invited to on-campus interviews in the spring semester.
Successful candidates demonstrate a strong aptitude for theological studies, leadership potential, a clear Catholic identity, and the ability to make an immediate contribution to the Augustine Institute’s apostolic internship program.
The deadline to apply is January 19, 2026.
Other information: St. John Paul II Scholars work in apostolic service in parishes, schools, or other Catholic apostolates in St. Louis under the direction of a mentor/supervisor. In compensation for this service in corporal or spiritual works of mercy, St. John Paul II Scholars’ room and board fees will be waived during their academic tenure at the Augustine Institute.
Due to the commitment level asked of a St. John Paul II Scholar, students who have additional employment beyond the weekly service hours may not be good candidates. Students may not count their current employment as an apostolic service assignment. In addition to their apostolic service, St. John Paul II Scholars are expected to conduct themselves as exemplary participants in on-campus life.
