Profound Beauty in Solid Teaching
With so much emphasis on marriage thanks to the Supreme Court decision this past June and the more recent Synod on the Family, the need for faithful, compelling and articulate marriage preparation and enrichment couldn’t be greater. That’s why the Augustine Institute is releasing a gift edition of Beloved: Finding Happiness In Marriage, which includes three high quality video presentations about God’s Design for Marriage, plus two personal workbooks for couples to use for marriage preparation or enrichment.
While it may seem obvious to those of us at the Augustine Institute that we should produce something like Beloved – along with the popular Symbolon: The Catholic Faith Explained series, and the recently released Reborn: You, Your Child & The Heart of Baptism – it may not be as clear to the casual observer. It’s fair to ask, “Why is a graduate school for the laity messing around with video series?”
The answer is, in part, that a vital part of the Augustine Institute’s mission is to inform and inspire the laity in the Catholic faith. Teaching students in the context of our graduate school is one way to do that. The other is to reach out to the parishes themselves with the means to enhance learning and excite an understanding of what Catholics believe and why we believe it.
But the Augustine Institute isn’t content to put out more “talking head” videos with a fire-hose of information so that we, or anyone, can simply check a To Do List of Catholic teaching. We’ve brought together many of the most engaging and trustworthy presenters, along with true masters in the cinematic arts, to create videos that touch minds and hearts, not just through sterile teaching but a vibrant experience that brings a deeper meaning to the lives of the viewers.
The Truth of the Catholic faith should never seem like drudgery. And the passion and joy of learning about marriage should not be a dispensation of mere facts. And in light of the assaults, redefinitions and aberrations coming from every group that demands their “love” be accepted, marriage should be affirmed and revitalized so that Catholics can give a credible response. Beloved aspires to show how marriage is an essential part of God’s Design for Humanity, not only for the Church and its members, but for our immediate culture and the world.
British author and scholar Dorothy Sayers once noted that, in Scripture, before we learn anything else about God – as a King or father or Savior – we discover that He is a Creator. Being made in His image, we are also endowed with a desire to create, not merely as an act of duty but with beauty and excellence, just as God did. Inherent in the mission of the Augustine Institute is the passion to reclaim artistry in our work for the Catholic faith. What better way to do that than by creating a truly beautiful video series about marriage.
