Curriculum Overview for Biblical TheologyThe concentration in Biblical Theology requires that the graduate student take the full core of Sacred Scripture and Theology courses (SCRP 501-SCRP 504; THEO 501-THEO 504) and one from the History core (HIST 501) to supply needed background for an in-depth study of Sacred Scripture. In addition, four other concentration courses must be taken: Old Testament Topics (SCRP 602), New Testament Topics (SCRP 606), Biblical Hermeneutics (SCRP 605), and a Directed Study (SCRP 608) or Scripture Practicum (SCRP 603). One semester of New Testament Greek (NTGR 501 Pass-Fail), one semester of Catechesis (CATE 604 or CATE 606), one semester of Leadership (Lead 601), and two hours of thesis credit (SCRP 614) are also required. Curriculum Overview for Systematic TheologyThe concentration in Systematic Theology is designed for those students intending to go on for further theological study or those who desire a more academically intensive and scholarly experience. The concentration requires that the student take the full core of Sacred Scripture, Theology, and History courses (SCRP 501-SCRP 504; THEO 501-THEO 504; HIST501 and HIST 504), one course in leadership or catechesis (LEAD 601 and LEAD 603; CATE 601, CATE 604 or CATE 606), and one additional course in Sacred Scripture (SCRP 602, SCRP 605, or SCRP 606). In addition, students are required to take three seminars in systematic theology, conduct one research semester, and write a thesis (THEO 610) in the final semester. There is also a requirement to pass a reading proficiency exam in one of the following languages: Greek, Latin, German, or French. Seminars will be reading and writing intensive with discussion based class sessions. Topics will change each semester and will cover major theological thinkers, themes of systematic theology, or the biblical foundations of doctrine. Language exams will entail the translation of a short passage of theological text with the aid of a dictionary. Language proficiency can be gained by auditing or taking language courses (Greek at the Augustine Institute or other languages at another institution) or through private study (reading groups are encouraged). Curriculum Overview for Evangelization and CatechesisThe concentration in Evangelization and Catechesis requires that the student take the full core of Sacred Scripture, Theology, and History courses (SCRP 501-SCRP 504; THEO 501-THEO 504; HIST 501 and HIST 504), as well as Foundational Catholic Themes (CATE 601), one semester in leadership (LEAD 601 and LEAD 603) and one semester in catechetics (CATE 604 and CATE 606). In addition, students are required to spend 2 semesters engaged in practicum (CATE 602 and CATE 605) and to write a thesis (CATE 610) in the final semester. Students in the Evangelization and Catechesis concentration who wish to undertake a strictly academic program, perhaps with the intention of doing doctoral study in the field, may replace the practica with directed study courses (512-612) in scripture, theology, or history and a scholarly thesis (CATE 614).
