EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEGE OF THE FAITH
Augustine Institute Certificate Program
What are Certificates? Certificates are widely recognized credentials given by many universities for short-term training in a variety of areas.
What are the benefits of Certificates? Certificates allow individuals to pursue specialized study in Scripture or theology without having to commit to a full course of Master’s study. They can be beneficial in a variety of ways. Some individuals pursue certification simply to deepen their knowledge of the Bible and the Catholic faith. Others do it to test the waters of graduate school. Professionals in Church ministry pursue certificates to deepen their knowledge in a specific field, enhance their own ministry, or receive the skills and credentials they need to prepare for the next step in their careers.
What kinds of Certificates are offered? At the Augustine Institute, there are two kinds of certificates offered:
1. Basic Certificate: This basic level certification program has no pre-requisites and consists of 8 continuing education units (CEUs). Courses are not taken for credit and are graded on a pass/fail basis. This program is ideal for those wanting to grow deeper in their faith. There is no requirement for an undergraduate degree to enter this basic certificate program.
2. Graduate Certificate: The Graduate Certificate program at the Augustine Institute allows individuals to pursue graduate-level credentials in a specific area of theology without committing to the full course of Master’s study at the Augustine Institute. This more advanced certificate is for those who already possess an undergraduate or graduate degree. It consists of 14 credit hours of graduate courses that are graded according to the normal grading policies of the Master of Arts degree, and can be counted toward a degree. Depending on one’s academic background, a student in this program may be required to complete up to 4 credit hours of foundational pre-requisite courses.
What areas of study can I pursue in the Certificate Programs? The Augustine Institute offers both a basic certificate and a graduate certificate in the following areas:
- Sacred Scripture
- Catholic Youth Ministry
- Evangelization and Catechesis
See below for the courses required for each of the certificates.
Are the Certificate Programs offered on campus or through distance education? Both. The various certificates can be earned either on-campus, through distance education, or through a combination of both.
Are there any prerequisites for the graduate certificate program? Yes. Two courses are required before beginning the graduate certificate program: PHIL500 – Introduction to Philsophy, THEO500 – Introduction to Graduate Study of Catholic Theology. These courses are prerequisites, but can be taken as corequisites if only one is offered during a semester. These prerequisites may be waived by the Dean depending on the applicant’s academic background.
Can courses taken for the Certificate Program be counted toward a Master of Arts degree? Only courses taken in the graduate certificate program can be counted toward a Master of Arts degree. The pass-fail courses in the Basic Certificate program, however, are not taken for graduate credit and would not count toward a Master’s of Arts degree.
What are the costs for the Certificate Programs? Students in the certificate programs pay the ordinary tuition and fees associated with the graduate courses offered by the Augustine Institute, whether through distance education or on-campus.
Are scholarships available for the Certificate Programs? Scholarships are not available for certificate courses.
How do I apply? Complete and submit the Certificate Application Form. Please direct questions regarding the certificate application to the Admissions Office at the Augustine Institute: (303) 937-4420.
